There is a beach, which I am yet to visit, and lots of shacks, shops, restaurants and hotels. Whether you want to buy some Indian handicrafts, Indian clothes, have a cup of coffee, eat the authentic Kerala Style Veg and Non – Veg dishes, or just take a stroll around this place, Fort Cochin is the place to be.
During our visit to Cochin in January, we had met our family friends come college mate for dinner on a Monday night. Since we were quite full from the heavy lunch in Thrissur that day, we decided to have a small bite at the ever popular multi-cuisine restaurant known as D’Lips Mango Tree on Princess Street in Fort Cochin. This is a restaurant that specializes in seafood and is located in South India’s playback singer Yesudas’s ancestral home. Currently, it is managed by Malayalam Film Star Dileep. There is a huge mango tree that grows in the center of the house. This tree was planted by Yesudas’s mother in his childhood days and therefore, Yesudas wanted to preserve it when the property was handed over for the restaurant.
There were 6 of us that evening. Four adults and two kids and come to see we were the only ‘locals’ there and the rest of the restaurant was filled with tourists! The time was just 8 pm and almost all the tables were full. We found a sofa and table in the corner and decided to sit there as it was the only place left for us to choose from! Not only that, but there was sufficient space for two kids to roam around. Unfortunately, it took almost 30 minutes for the waiter to realize that we were sitting there and we just had to wait endlessly for the menu and even a glass of water!
My friend ordered for sweet corn vegetable soup as the kids like it a lot and all three of them enjoyed the bowlful of warm soup. Her husband had ordered for a chocolate milkshake which came in a tall glass and was the perfect choice for the Cochin weather. My husband ordered for a chickoo shake which was sweet and really thick. Even chickoo ice cream is one of our favorites! Along with the soup, my friend ordered for an order of vegetable fried rice. The quantity was just right for her and the two kids. Heard it tasted good and was not oily at all. French Fries are one of my favorite snacks, and though it is not something very healthy, I normally order this if it’s on the menu. As I was browsing through the menu, I came across one of my favorite desserts which is Mexican Fried Ice Cream. But what they served was totally different from the authentic dessert. It was served with strawberry ice cream and the taste was bitter and I didn’t like it at all.
I am sure this place has lots of yummy food to choose from and of course a long list of drinks to wash it down. Definitely a place to go with friends and chill out for a few hours, and not recommended for families especially with little kids as they would feel bored easily.
